Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.
Proverbs 21:23
NIV Bible
Most of us are privileged to live in countries where we enjoy freedom of speech without having to be afraid of expressing our opinions or beliefs. However, with this freedom comes a responsibility to be respectful and careful about the things we say. Sometimes we face situations that anger us and we may feel the urge to vent, but we must censor our words as they have the potential to negatively impact others and to discredit our testimony as believers. Ultimately we wind up in some kind of calamity because of our hasty reaction.
There will always be people and situations that will distress and annoy us, but the key is to think before we speak. Instead of immediately retaliating, we may need to walk away and this gives us time to reflect and carefully choose our words. Usually, a soft, but firm response is able to bring calm to a situation and evoke remorse from the other person. Our words have the power to edify, heal, encourage, but also to tear down, belittle and destroy. We need to guard our mouths and choose our words wisely.
Thank you Lord for freedom of speech. I pray that my words will be acceptable and pleasing to you, that I will guard my mouth and think before I speak. Regardless of the situation, help me to never use offensive or abusive language. I love you, Jesus. Amen!
Be Blessed!
