Listen to me; listen and pay close attention.

Listening can prove to be quite difficult for many and it's a skill that we should all develop. There are so many people who are crying out to simply be heard, to have someone listen to them without interrupting or losing interest. So many times, when someone is speaking, the other person can be seen reading a text message or glancing at a television show with scant regard for the person speaking. We need to be invested in the lives of those around us and one way is to pay close attention to people and let them know that they matter and we care about what they have to say.

The ability to listen is a sign of a compassionate and caring person. When we listen, we are able to identify with the feelings and concerns of others and get an insight into their struggles, interests and past experiences. When we listen, people feel validated and understood. Sometimes, it means hearing the same story over and over again from an enthusiastic child or an elderly person who's become forgetful, but when we take the time to listen and pay attention, we are really being instruments of God's love.

Thank you Lord for always listening to me. Help me to be a good listener, to show respect to others and let them know that they matter and I care about what they have to say. I love you, Jesus. Amen!
