Then The Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother, Abel?" " I don't know, " he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Genesis 4:9
NIV Bible
Cain had just murdered his brother and in this verse, when questioned as to the whereabouts of Abel, Cain flippantly asked if he was his brother's keeper. As children of God, this concept of being our brother's keeper holds true for us today. Our 'brothers' can be those we interact with, family members, friends and basically, people in general. Being someone's keeper implies that we are to be concerned about their physical and spiritual welfare, take an interest in them, watch out and alert them to possible pitfalls and dangers.
We are not responsible for their actions, but we do have a responsibility to watch out, to care, to encourage, to edify, to love and lift them up when they are weighed down by the cares and struggles of life. It also involves helping others to reach their full potential in Christ. We may think that our lives are busy enough with our hectic lifestyles and concerns, but as believers, we cannot be indifferent and shy away from our duty to watch over those around us. Our involvement in others can lighten someone's load and impact their eternity with Christ. We are indeed called to be our brother's keeper.
Thank you Lord for my brothers and sisters. Help me to be concerned and care for the welfare of those around me. Let my life impact others for You and with Your help, may I encourage and ease their burdens. I love you, Jesus. Amen!
Be Blessed!
Lydia
