Harsh, careless and angry words will always cause tense and volatile situations to escalate while gentle words diffuse and bring resolution. We all know people who are easily angered and prone to lash out at others without flinching. In fact, we witness this behaviour everywhere when adults become angry by things that upset them and react in an abrasive and thoughtless manner to the people they believe are responsible. They can be heard spewing angry words at waiters, flight attendants, coaches, cashiers, receptionists and even children with absolutely no thought to the pain, humiliation and hurt being inflicted on the other person.
There will always be things that anger and upset us but we have a choice. We can choose to respond angrily, be Christlike and speak in a gentle and soft manner or we can simply walk away. As children of God, we are to be examples in all we say and do. We must be the ones to show God's love through our speech. When we speak softly and kindly, we deflect anger and promote peace.
Thank you Lord for being the perfect example. Help me to never retaliate harshly and angrily to others. I pray that I will always be kind and gentle in the way I speak. I love you, Jesus. Amen!
